Medical oncologists diagnose and treat cancer with medication — chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and hormonal therapy. Often the lead physician coordinating care.

Hematologist-oncologists treat both blood cancers (leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma) and solid tumors. In most U.S. practices, the same physician covers both specialties.

Radiation oncologists use radiation therapy to treat cancer — external beam, brachytherapy, proton therapy, and SBRT. Often works alongside medical and surgical oncologists.

Surgical oncologists specialize in cancer surgery — biopsies, tumor removal, and complex cancer operations. Some subspecialize in specific organ systems.

Gynecologic oncologists treat cancers of the female reproductive system — ovarian, uterine, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancer.
